City gates and walls are ancient defensive structures built to protect the cities. There are some original intact city walls and gates in China. The other cities have re-constructed or remains of the former ancient structures and they are listed according to the prefectures they are located.

The 2800 years old city along the Han river has a strategic position. The Battle of Xiangyang between invading Mongols and defending Song dynasty last for 6 years. Once the city was lost to the Mongols, Song dynasty ended soon after.
